Wie to play first tournament in South Korea

Michelle Wie will play for the first time in South Korea, accepting an invitation Tuesday to play in the SK Telecom Open against the men on the Asian Tour.

K.J. Choi is the defending champion of the tournament, to be held May 4-7 at a course to be determined.

Wie was born and raised in Hawaii, but her parents are from South Korea and it was the first language she learned. At the Sony Open earlier this month, Wie conducted television interviews in Korean and English.

Riviera interested in Presidents Cup

For the last few years, the PGA Tour has floated the idea of taking the Presidents Cup to the West Coast so that it could be broadcast in prime time.

Now it has an offer that might be tough to refuse.

Riviera Country Club, the venerable course off Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, met with tour officials Monday about hosting the matches in 2009.

“They’re keenly interested in taking a look at this,” said Michael Bodney, senior vice president of championship management for the PGA Tour.

Loren Roberts completed a two-week Hawaiian sweep by holing a 9-foot eagle putt on the final hole for an even-par 72 and a two-stroke victory over Scott Simpson in the Turtle Bay Championship on Sunday.

The 50-year-old Roberts, the first Champions Tour player to win his first two starts of a season since Larry Nelson in 2001, finished his wire-to-wire win with a 12-under 204 total.

Sergio Garcia double bogeyed the second hole at the third round of the Buick Invitational on Saturday. Then he roared back to shoot a 68 and finish the day tied with Rod Pampling for the lead at 11 under. Tiger Woods and Nathan Green are one shot off the pace heading into the final day.

Roberts takes four-stroke lead in Turtle Bay

Loren Roberts moved a step closer to a Hawaiian sweep, shooting his second straight 6-under 66 on to take a four-stroke lead over Scott Simpson in the Turtle Bay Championship on Saturday.

The 50-year-old Roberts, coming off a record-setting victory last Sunday in the MasterCard Championship on the Big Island, had a tournament-record 12-under 132 total on Turtle Bay’s Arnold Palmer Course.

“It’s not easy,” Roberts said.
